More and more tourists are coming to the mountains in the summer and they have an impressive range of activities at their disposal.
Obviously, the larger the resort, the more varied the activities on offer. But above all, there are the activities that nature itself offers.
Hiking
The first activity everyone thinks of when they think of mountains and summer is of course hiking.
You don’t need to be a specialist in trail running or long runs in the mountains, all tourist offices offer maps and often so-called “family” hikes. Don’t hesitate to go to them to get advice and choose, with their help, the right route and the difficulty adapted to the age of your children.
Don’t underestimate children, they are capable of endurance, resistance and they will surprise you by the pleasure they will take in discovering a new environment despite the efforts… and if on your hike you come across cows, marmots, a stream to picnic in, a lake to dip your feet in or blueberries, they will make memories for life. A tip: to increase the experience, take a ski lift for the first ascent… and don’t forget the binoculars!
For the little ones under three years old, it is often for the dads that it is more tiring as they have to be carried on their backs! Luckily, there is now a lot of good equipment available.
In any case, opt for a cool start and a lunch break in the mountain pastures. You will then have the afternoon to rest the little ones and to take a nap yourself!
Mountain biking
From the age of 8, mountain biking becomes a new activity, which it is highly recommended to practice under supervision. In all resorts, outings are organised by age group and as with skiing in winter, don’t hesitate to entrust your children to professionals, they will benefit from advice and will discover more things. The mountains are an exceptional playground for mountain bikers!
Visits to sheepfolds
In all the massifs, you will have the opportunity to visit sheepfolds or farms. The welcome is warm and it is always an opportunity to taste delicious products, often cheeses. It is for the children to be confronted with reality and life in the mountains, the history, the seasons…
For the more active, the resorts, through the tourist offices, also offer many family activities such as orienteering races, discovering the flora and fauna, various sporting activities (rafting, tennis, archery, swimming, etc.). Don’t hesitate to spend a night in a refuge: a change of scenery is guaranteed whatever the age of the children.
In conclusion, the mountains are a place where you take the time to live in contact with and at the pace of nature. You take the time to observe and do sports. It is a place where you can take a break from the world of numbers, where you can meet up as a family, a place where children and adults can share: hiking during the day, family games in the evening.
Finally, for children, even the youngest, try observing the starry skies (spectacular in the mountains) or a sunrise, which are great memories for the children.
